On Sunday, June 21st, with the score tied 0-0 in the tenth minute of the FIFA World Cup match between Spain and Saudi Arabia, 18 year old Lamine Yamal slid into a cross at the back post to give the Spanish side a lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the match.
Lamine Yamal burst onto the scene for F.C. Barcelona on April 29th, 2023 before being catapulted into fame by his astounding and award-winning performance for the Spanish national team in their route to victory at the 2024 Euros. At the time of his debut he was not yet 16 years old, becoming the youngest player to ever suit up for Barcelona. As we progress through the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it is safe to say that Lamine Yamal has continued to live up to the hype, posing an incredibly dangerous threat to any defense with his speed and skill that frequently draws comparisons to Brazilian legend, Neymar. Now, unlike Neymar, Lamine Yamal is a World Cup Champion.
The goal against Saudi Arabia was his first of the tournament, and made him one of the youngest goalscorers in the history of the world cup at just 18 years and 343 days. Today, in honor of Lamine's victory in the final this past Sunday, we are going to be taking a look at some of the other young goalscorers in FIFA World Cup history.
- Lionel Messi - 18 and 357 days
The man who needs no introduction. The Argentina international has amassed a catalog of goals, awards, and trophies that makes him one of the strongest contenders for the greatest soccer players of all time. It didn’t take him long to start developing this resume, as he scored within 15 minutes of being subbed on for his FIFA World Cup debut on June 16th, 2006.

The Barcelona forward has already drawn serious comparisons to former Barcelona players such as Neymar and even Lionel Messi, and the world is very excited to watch his career unfold.
- Kerim Alajbegović - 18 years and 276 days
A young star who hasn’t quite earned the attention he deserves, Alajbegović rifled a shot from 20 yards out into the near post to open the scoring in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s group stage match against Qatar. Alajbegovic currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, but has earned serious attention from clubs such as Atalanta, in the Serie A, due to his World Cup heroics.
- Dmitri Sychev - 18 years and 231 days
Sychev became the youngest player to play for either Russia or the Soviet Union when he was called up for the 2002 Fifa World Cup in South Korea and Japan. He scored Russia’s final goal of the tournament in the closing minutes against Belgium to cut the Belgian lead to one. Russia, who needed a draw to advance, ended up failing to do so.
- Nicolae Kovács - 18 years and 197 days
Despite failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Romania boasts a storied history in the tournament, especially in its earliest iterations. One piece of that history is Nicolae Kovács, who represented his nation in 1930, 1934, and 1938. In 1930, the first Fifa World Cup ever hosted, Kovács scored in Romania’s opening victory in front of the smallest crowd ever recorded in the tournament’s history.
- Michael Owen - 18 years and 190 days.
Another familiar face, especially in his home nation of England where he became the face of youth talent. At just 17 years old, Owen burst onto the scene as a starter for Liverpool FC in the English Premier League, eventually earning himself a call-up to the national team. At the 1998 World Cup in France, in the round of 16 against Argentina, Owen broke free of three defenders before firing into the back of the net from 15 yards out.
- Ibrahim Mbaye - 18 years and 143 days
Senegal were handily defeated in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against France but there was a moment where it looked like they might fight their way back into it. In the 95th Ibrahim Mbaye beat a defender to hammer in Senegal’s first goal of the tournament to cut France’s lead to one goal. The moment was quickly overshadowed less than a minute later when France’s Kylian Mbappe restored their two goal lead from 30 yards out, but the moment will always remain special to the people of Senegal.
- Gavi - 18 years and 110 days
Another member of the Spanish squad that came out on top this summer, it was actually in Qatar in 2022 that Gavi made his mark on history. Already leading 4-0, Gavi stepped into a cross with the outside of his boot, demonstrating exceptional technique to solidify his nation’s dominance.
- Manuel Rosas - 18 years and 93 days
Manuel Rosas scored the first penalty on this list - it also happened to be the first penalty in the history of the World Cup. Rosas converted for Mexico against Argentina just three days after he set another milestone by scoring the first ever own goal in the history of the tournament. The penalty secured his place as the youngest ever World Cup goalscorer, a position that he held for 28 years.
- Pelé - 17 years and 239 days
Who else? Pelé is the epitome of youth success in athletics and he put on a show as a 17-year-old at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. He became the youngest World Cup scorer ever when he put away the only goal of the match in Brazil’s quarter-final against Wales. It was in the semi-finals, however, against France, where he truly cemented his legacy as a legend of the game. He scored a hat-trick, with all three goals coming in the second half as Brazil ran away to a 5-2 victory. Pelé then continued his tear in the finals, scoring two goals to help Brazil defeat Sweden, claiming the nation’s first of back-to-back World Cup victories.
